I've been wanting to share my memories & screenshots of Wooden Axe for years, but haven't done so as I figured it would be a large project in itself. But I realized I could do it in bite-size portion here on the forum, going chronologically and referencing some of the stuff I remember. As the resident roadbuilder I never sat around at a static build. I was always moving, traveling over the next horizon, dropping in on projects, etc, so I captured quite a bit of that world.

For this first post I take you back to a busy Sunday evening: September 2, 2013. It was my first day on Wooden Axe. My old server Aporkalypse had effectively folded since it was effectively a private server and wasn't reaching out for new members. I was on Delta Minecraft for a couple of months, but I drifted away after seeing just the same 4 people on during the day. I don't know how I found Wooden Axe, maybe from a large server listing, but I liked what I saw.

I logged in and headed east from Spawn. As you can see there was practically nothing in that direction. This area would later be filled in with temple-like shops and large homes (but they'd always be empty):

    2013-09-02_17.24.09.jpg

I don't remember where this was... I guess I was just wandering around randomly.
    2013-09-02_17.36.44.jpg

Some of the first in-game chat I saw. I don't recognize most of those names anymore. 2013-09-02_17.39.09.jpg

I had the presence of mind to capture who was online. A lot of names I don't recognize, but also many that I do: @btug (in the same circles as Costco & @Cryptomeria), @Movada, @Mr_Cortus, @EP43 (holy crap, he's active on Intersnout now and was there the night I first logged in), @Daddypound (whatever happened to him?), @NchantedHoe (of course!), @Mr_Andy (opened the famous Walmart that preceded Costco and OneDollarShop), and @DirtyAlpaca (traveled everywhere via llama on Zune and traveled overland to visit the townsite where @Tators19 was; you'll see pics of that later). There's a couple of names I just vaguely remember, @CraigJJHarris, @Hextrasher, @mikej1592, @Malajunta, @Movada, and the rest I just don't remember. I do recognize below the eastward stretch from Spawn, probably near Matt's girlfriend's land, can't recall her name. The road angled northeast from here, arriving at KFC, Eiffel Tower, and the start of Intersnout 10 (that would ultimately grow to an insane 100 km).

Some conversation one hour into the game, as I create my first survival shelter north of Spawn. 2013-09-02_18.20.57.jpg

Game conversation shows people being surprised that I bought my first food items, presumably from Walmart: 2013-09-02_18.35.53.jpg

    Day 2, September 3, 2013.

I remember SgtOctopusi was on a lot in 2013. Meanwhile I found my first diamond.

    2013-09-03_20.55.09.jpg

Shopping at one of @Cryptomeria's shops. It wasn't Costco, it didn't exist yet, this was presumably the first shops that went up near Spawn:

    2013-09-03_20.58.53.jpg

Some chat that evening. I also helped someone set a /res:

    2013-09-03_23.04.42.jpg

@Amelyth and @Griggitz, those are two noteworthy names from the old days. @Mr_Cortus was a very active builder; you'll see him a lot if this thread keeps going.

My third day, the evening of Tuesday September 4, 2013:

The @Mr_Andy chest signs make this one of the first incarnations of Walmart. The Walmart complex was located along the future Intersnout 10 about 2 km from Spawn. Back then it seemed FAR, but over time it ended up being extremely close to Spawn compared to all the other land that gradually opened up. There's a new name in the chat, @racegirl21, she's been with us here on Intersnout. I also see @Hannah_B4nana and @Zerkmeister. Also there's the funny death messages that were a hallmark of Wooden Axe.

    2013-09-04_22.48.58.jpg

Looks like some debate about whether a dirt block counts as a land claim.

    2013-09-04_22.49.06.jpg

Some good old arguing in chat, pretty much the norm. We sure are courteous on Intersnout by comparison.

    Day 4 -- Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

This is one of the early Spawn welcome displays, located in the Train Station. I believe @Supersnaketate designed most of it:

    2013-09-05_00.39.49.jpg

Me trying to get up to speed with /res's... apparently the protected zone around Spawn was very large and I was having to walk about half a km away to build:

    2013-09-05_00.42.16.jpg

Some discussion about a /res named "penisland"... I can't remember what was there. Some joking about the SNL Sean Connery Celebrity Jeopardy skit:

Some random shots during my first and second week... these cover September 8 to September 17, 2013.

Here we see @Mark_Nutt joining (don't remember him at all), and one of the first appearances of @WTFbeccca, one of our most notable PVP players/raiders/trap builders.

    2013-09-08_18.07.31.jpg

Randomly saw the branch mines under Spawn thanks to a glitch:

    2013-09-11_12.38.44.jpg

I began working on a suspension bridge about 1 km east of Spawn, which was integrated into Intersnout 10. It was my first major build on Wooden Axe. A lot of the old-timers have likely seen it. The bridge was close to @elitefont's desert build -- he is talking to me in the chat below as we arrange how to route it near his place. His place had a sign that said "FONT".

    2013-09-11_17.17.07.jpg

This is where the bridge was located:

    map1.jpg

This shows some of the very first Intersnout 10 as it approached the bridge through a taiga forest. Also here we get a glimpse of the resident racist, @colecross, showing his true colors -- Matt kicked him off the server after a few weeks of this.

    2013-09-11_19.37.05.jpg

A look at my completed suspension bridge.

    2013-09-12_21.15.12.jpg

Ended up naming it the Thurston Howell III Memorial Bridge.

    2013-09-13_16.47.04.jpg

Mining for materials. Really cool to see all these old names in chat. Colecross is at it again, this time trying to get a rise out of @NchantedHoe.

    2013-09-13_18.35.40.jpg

The first property I built was a pyramid about 250 m northeast of Spawn, seen here within it. I ended up selling the land later on to someone and moving out further to build the roads (Porkton I think).

    2013-09-17_22.01.17.jpg

Some discussion. There's @JackHair (another PVPer) and @A_Bunny1, and @glt1022. Also the first of @fiskit_says we see.

    2013-09-17_22.22.05.jpg

And I will stop there for now... more in the next week or so.

this is nice map, reliving the wonder of the first times on the axe, was the apork server as grand(or grander) than the axe? how much of a difference was it to convert yourself to the play styles that axe had?

Not very much of a difference. The previous server I played on mostly (Aporkalypse) was a bit more "socialist" (no shops, lots of sharing) and less PVP, but I thought the laid back style of Wooden Axe was more fun. Both were geared for large maps, large builds, and infrastructure.

By September 19 (about 3 weeks into my time on Wooden Axe) I had built the Intersnout road outward about 2 km, through the desert. This is near where the Taco Bell would be. Lots of names in chat... I've often thought of trying to PM them individually in Wooden Axe to in hopes of pinging their e-mail and getting them to come over here.

    2013-09-26_17.23.38.jpg

The Intersnout (which was called Transcontinental Road back then) led into a winter biome, and into a swamp biome. Here is a shelter in the swamp... a little further would be the big CVS store (which was sold to @kireinafujin and became Home Depot).

    2013-09-19_20.38.26.jpg

    Signs at the shelter:

    2013-09-19_20.55.17.jpg

@Matt patches in to smoke @Lepody about the rules. She's the girl from Leeds UK who was later busted for stealing from shops (can't remember how this was done). I'm not sure she deserved all the scorn as Wooden Axe kind of encouraged people to be opportunistic if things weren't protected properly (take the case of iud13 and K-Mart). Also there's @JackHair, one of our favorite PVPers who had a big house in the west. Shoutout to @nycpixie who appears here back on September 22, 2013 and continues to be active on Intersnout.

    2013-09-22_14.04.44.jpg

"Does the transcontinental road ever end?" lol, it's only 3 km long by this point and would have another 97+ km added to it over time. Colecross is at it again stirring up drama.

    September 28 - October 4, 2013:

The CVS store (later Home Depot) comes together. Wow, look at all those names.

    A group shot of characters at Hunger Games: @Mr_Cortus, @block_saucy, @Pobonobo, @EP43, @mydogiswellhuge, October 4, 2013:

    2013-10-04_19.36.36.jpg

There's another name, @KyleraRhea... I remember she was also in Oklahoma City and ended up leaving because she didn't like the cursing on the server.

    2013-10-05_12.49.23.jpg

A player, @LeeSuss, on the Transcontinental Road. I don't recognize the name at all, they probably weren't on the server long:

    2013-10-05_13.08.47.jpg

Moving cows around on the road, a good use for roads (at least at the time, mobs avoid half slabs now). This is the Transcon Road in the jungle before it reaches the Walmart area:

    2013-10-05_13.13.54.jpg

Crossing a forest before getting to the Walmart area. We see @RocketTam, @zombiexm, and @UNST3RBLICH for the first time:

    2013-10-05_16.37.41.jpg

Inside my lair in the pyramid near Spawn. In chat, some new names: @block_saucy, @lovesbigapples, @groene_specht, and @Kalateth.

    2013-10-06_14.49.19.jpg

The newly constructed Taco Bell, close to the suspension bridge, October 6, 2013. A lot of you probably remember it since it was a short walk from Spawn. I had an iron golem behind the counter at Taco Bell... someone killed it regularly (probably one of the PVPers) so I'd drop in once a month to put a new one in. The parallel rail line was not yet built:

    2013-10-06_16.22.52.jpg

So everything you've seen on the page so far is within about -3500 of Spawn, i.e. not further than about 3-4 km. We haven't even gotten to Walmart, much less to Porkton, K-Mart, the mesas, Mako, etc, which are vastly farther away and most of which haven't been built yet.

    That's probably it for today.

I had 9 months head start on you. And I think you joined with that existing map, which I believe was reset and started around July 2013 (IRC)? Snake built the spawn after the reset.... well, most of it. Woodenaxeprofile.jpg

Aw man, I remember the contest to see who got to build spawn, and then the anticipation of when it was being built. Matt even let me in to check it out before it was done. Those were the days. Glad to sees many familiar people on this server.

I joined WA in March 2014. In April there was some drama after Matt killed a bunch of mobs, including the Ghast that was carefully imprisoned in Costco. I still have the chat logs, included below, with all the usual noise. It was a bit of a roller coaster but came to a happy conclusion.

2015-11-08, Matt spawned an enderdragon for us to kill. I think it was the only enderdragon fight I saw on WA. After the boss fight was over Matt started spawning in other random monsters, including zombie pigmen riding bats (screenshot below). At some point he spawned in a bunch of charged creepers, one of which blew up several others, resulting in creeper heads being dropped. Myself, Mr_Andy, JohnathanFredrick, and andrough each got one. They were the only creeper heads in the WoodenAxe world due to charged creepers never happening naturally for some reason (much to the dismay of ButtUglyJeff, who had built a massive charged creeper farming area with nothing to show for it).

I used mine to create a creeper banner, and distributed copies widely to ensure the head wasn't wasted.
